VALROSA
The name Valrosa is
derived from the place where the original bearer lived, a place named Valrossa, a village
in the Lombardia region of northern Italy, in the province of Bergamo. Lombardia
was where the Lombards first settled after their invasion in 568. By 1300, they had
branched south to Sicily, where they acquired considerable estates. Also included in
the same lineage as Valrosa, were Rosa, La Rosa, and Di Rosa. The earliest record of this
Valrosa lineage is in Sicily, where they were anciently seated during the time of the
Norman occupation. Gerardo Rosa was an illustrious cavalier from Bergamo, who
acquired estates in Syracuse. Maurizio Rosa became Castellan of Palermo Castle in
1320. Antonio Rosa succeeded to the castle in 1345. Giovani Rosa was a
senator of Palermo in 1475. Vincenzo was a senator in 1584, and he was also
ambassador to King Fillip III in 1604. From their early beginnings, for the next few
centuries, the family name also acquired other interests as branches of this fine old
Italian family established themselves throughout Italy. In the 14th century, they
were found in Cava and Napoli.

BENEDETTO
The ancient territory of Emilia Romagna incorporates the cities of
Bologna, Ferrara, Modena, Parma, Piacenz and Ravenna in mid-northern Italy. The
region is well known for its agriculture, natural resources and industry. The
earliest origins of the surname Benedetto have been traced to this region in the northern
part of Italy in Bolgna (Bononia) in Emilia, the capital of the province of Bologna.
Also included in the same lineage as Benedetto are Bencivenga, Bencifenha, Benvenga,
Benevenia, and Benci to name a few.
The Holy Roman Empire was established in 962,
when Pope John XII crowned Germanic leader Otto emperor, and all of northern Italy came
under his rule. In the south, the Byzantines still held power, till the 11the
century, when the Normans defeated the Byzantines. Pope Nicholas III took control of
Ravenna in 1278, and the region was governed by a Spaniard, Cardinal Albornoz, during the
papal schism. For the next few centuries, both Emilia and Romagna were ruled by
papal legates, who were representatives of the Pope, sent to manage the government of the
people. During this time, important members of the Benedetto family were found in
Bologna, where they were first anciently recorded. From Bologna, where the family
traces back to the 10th century, they branched to Sicily, Emilia, Venezia and Toscanny as
they grew and prospered. During Midieval times, they are recorded as a noble family
of San Benedetto of Norcia. They were displaced by the many conflicts of the time,
and the family was displaced throughout southern Italy.
The Benedetto name has been traced back to the
15th Century in Sicily, when Luke Benedetto was appointed Crown Duke of Sicily by Queen
Isabella.
Many Centuries later, Luke Benedetto was born in the year
1805. He died in 1908, at the age of 103 from pneumonia.
Born to him was a son Luke Benedetto, who married Gustina
Pavone. Gustina bore Luke 6 children: Daniel, Frank, and Ana, who remained in Italy, and Michael

Defining the
Relationship
Cousin (a.k.a "first cousin") - Your first
cousins are the people in your family who have two of the same grandparents as you. In
other words,
they are the children of your aunts and uncles.
Second Cousin- Your second cousins are the people in your family who have
the same great-grandparents as you., but not the same grandparents.
Third, Fourth, and Fifth Cousins - Your third
cousins have the same great-great-grandparents, fourth cousins have the same
great-great-great-grandparents, and so on.
Removed - When the word "removed" is
used to describe a relationship, it indicates that the two people are from different
generations.
You and your first cousins are in the same generation (two generations younger than your
grandparents), so the word "removed"
is not used to describe your relationship.
The words "once removed" mean that there is a difference of one generation. For
example, your mother's first cousin is your
first cousin, once removed. This is because your mother's first cousin is one generation
younger than your grandparents and
you are two generations younger than your grandparents. This one-generation difference
equals "once removed."
Twice removed means that there is a two-generation difference. You are two generations
younger than a first cousin of your
grandmother, so you and your grandmother's first cousin are first cousins, twice removed.

Instructions for Using a
Relationship Chart
- Pick two people in your family and figure out which ancestor
they have in common. For example, if you chose yourself and a cousin,
you would have a grandparent in common.
- Look at the top row of the chart and find the first person's
relationship to the common ancestor.
- Look at the far left column of the chart and find the second
person's relationship to the common ancestor.
- Determine where the row and column containing those two
relationships meet.
